New Bill Would Require School and Fire Districts to Refund Successful Tax Appeals

New Jersey Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll (R-Morris) has proposed Assembly Bill A-3412 which would require school districts and fire districts to join local towns and counties in refunding successful tax appeals.  Currently, only municipalities and counties are responsible for crediting a property owner in the event of a successful appeal.  According to an article published in the Gloucester County Times, successful tax appeals can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to litigate, and the refunds can total in the millions.  To become law, the bill will need to be approved by the Assembly and have a companion bill approved in the New Jersey Senate before reaching the Governor’s desk for signature.
